William Ellery DOI

William Ellery was born in Newport Rhode Island on 22 December, 1727 and died on 15February, 1820 at the age of 92 He was schooled by his father who was a merchant a graduate of Harvard College. William graduated from Harvard College in 1747; He followed his father and became a merchant. but started practicing law in 1770. He was a congregationalist. William was also a member of the Freemasons and as such was not an orthodox Christian.

William replaced Samuel Ward, after his death in 1776, in the Continental Congress. He Also served as a judge of the Rhode Island Supreme Court and by 1785 became a staunch Abolitionist.  He was also an active member of the Second Congregational Church of Newport.  William married Ann Remington in 1750 but she died in 1764.  He remarried in 1767 toAbigail Cary and had 19 children.
